Preface
Dear Fellow Biography Nuts,
To explain how I came up with the idea to start Biography Nuts, I believe it is important for you to understand how I got interested in reading.
Just like many others, my passion for reading started at an early age. Whenever I wanted to learn more about a subject, my first instinct was always to go to the local library to devour a book on the topic at hand. Many years later, I am still the same.
As an avid investor, I went through all the classics such as the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham and the various shareholder letters from Berkshire Hathaway. While many are familiar with Warren Buffett, through these readings and research, I was actually more into learning about Charlie Munger, the Vice President of Berkshire Hathaway.
Munger is a certified “Biography Nut” himself and has always encouraged individuals to compound their wisdom by reading books. And by that, he means a lot of books. The following quotes about reading and learning from Munger are just exceptional:
“In my whole life, I have known no wise people (over a broad subject matter area) who didn’t read all the time - none. Zero. You’d be amazed at how much Warren reads - and how much I read. My children laugh at me. they think I’m a book with a couple of legs sticking out.”
— Charlie Munger
“I believe in the discipline of mastering the best that other people have ever figured out.”
— Charlie Munger
“I am a biography nut myself and I think when you're trying to teach the great concepts that work, it helps to tie them into the lives and personalities of the people who developed them. I think that you learn economics better if you make Adam Smith your friend. That sounds funny, making friends among the eminent dead, but if you go through life making friends with the emìnent dead who had the right ideas, I thìnk it will work better in life and work better in education. It's way better than just giving the basic concepts.”
— Charlie Munger
Just like how Munger inspired me to read consistently and to make friends with the eminent dead, I hope I can do the same to you by sharing with you 2-3 concise insights, ideas or concepts that I learn from each book.
Until next time,
BN
